Water Is Life Legal Summit 2022

On Thursday, December 8th and Friday, December 9th, 2022. Keepers of the Water and the Indigenous Knowledge and Wisdom Centre were honoured to host the first-ever Water is Life Legal Summit. Exploring water protection through an Indigenous lens was centred throughout the two-day event.

Since time immemorial, Indigenous Peoples have been the stewards of these lands. We hold the answers to protecting the Water.

The summit explored essential topics, including UNDRIP, Doctrine of Discovery, FPIC, Criminalization of Indigenous People, the Indian Act, Indigenous Legal Systems vs. Canadian Legal Systems, the Alberta Regulatory System, and the recognition the Personhood of Rivers.
