Community Engagement Coordinator

Keepers of the Water (KOW) is an Indigenous-led organization. Its members include First Nations, Métis, Inuit, environmental groups, concerned citizens, and communities working together for the protection of water, air, land, and all living things today and tomorrow in the Arctic Ocean Drainage Basin. 

The Arctic Ocean Drainage Basin is a vast ecosystem vital to Indigenous People’s inherent rights and relationships to the land. Spanning 3.5M km2, this internationally vital watershed holds 60% of Canada’s freshwater and 12% of the world’s.

POSITION SUMMARY 

KOW is a growing organization looking for someone passionate about Indigenous rights and the protection of water who is interested in joining our team as our part-time Community Engagement Coordinator

The successful candidate will lead, coordinate and undertake community engagement with Indigenous communities in Alberta, Saskatchewan and NWT. This will provide education and awareness of Keepers of the Water’s ongoing campaigns to protect and conserve water in our ancestral territories.

They must be able to create and deliver presentations to Indigenous communities and local concerned citizens on Keepers of the Water’s initiatives for protecting water from fossil fuel extraction. This will require the ability to travel and work in a remote setting.

They must be able to participate in collaborative decision-making and engage Indigenous communities within Treaties 6, 8, and 11 territories and those that share the traditional territory across Northern British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan.

This position requires experience and the ability to navigate and work with multiple Indigenous communities, ENGOs (environmental non-governmental organizations), and local and regional non-Indigenous allies.

The Community Engagement Coordinator position is a part-time, one-year contract (20 hours/week @ $30/hour). However, some extended travel and evening/weekend hours may be required. Please note that this is a remote, online position, and the suitable candidate can work independently and in a team environment under minimal supervision.

Due to the evolving nature of work within an Indigenous-led environmental non-governmental organization, you may be required to assist with other projects or campaigns to meet KOW’s Vision, Mission, and Mandate. 

The skills and responsibilities required for this position are

  • Working directly with the Executive Director and Project Funding Coordinator.

  • Lead and facilitate community engagement sessions and meetings.

  • Plan, organize and implement engagement and/or consultation with Indigenous communities, including land users, harvesters, youth and Elders.

  • Organize events with attention to detail in planning for smooth execution of event logistics.

  • Maintain detailed, accurate, and up-to-date records on community engagement activities, which may be used in strategy development, planning, or legal contexts.

  • Work independently and in a team environment under minimal in-person supervision.

  • Strong project planning skills; problem-solving and solutions-oriented; the ability to set goals and achieve results.

  • Sound technical knowledge of media software and interface design programs. Examples include Google Workspace, Canva and Adobe.

  • Proficient in Google Workspace with familiarity or willingness to learn KOW’s office software and develop social media channel content (e.g. Google Meet, Zoom, Instagram, Facebook, X/Twitter).

  • Work efficiently as a team player and have demonstrated experience in collaborative decision-making.

  • Work independently and remotely while maintaining strong communication and accountability practices.

  • Develop strong working relationships with rights holders, stakeholders and community partners.

  • Must be legally entitled to work in so-called Canada.

COMPENSATION RATE: $30 per hour (20 hrs/week with extended hours approved by the executive director or project funding coordinator). 

The completed deliverables are based on $30/hour up to 20 hours per week. The executive director must receive permission for extra hours or additional business costs. This is a contract position, and you will be responsible for reporting and paying all taxes to Revenue Canada.
