On Thursday, December 8th and Friday, December 9th, 2022. Keepers of the Water and the Indigenous Knowledge and Wisdom Centre were honoured to host the first-ever Water is Life Legal Summit. Exploring water protection through an Indigenous lens was centred throughout the two-day event.

Since time immemorial, Indigenous Peoples have been the stewards of these lands. We hold the answers to protecting the Water. This was discussed further by opening up the conversations on the following topics through keynote presentations and break-out session presentations:

  • UNDRIP

  • Doctrine of Discovery

  • Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC)

  • Criminalization of Indigenous People on Our Lands

  • The Indian Act

  • Indigenous Legal Systems VS Canadian Legal Systems

  • Alberta Regulatory System

  • The Personhood of Rivers and so much more!
