Makere Stewart-Harawira, Ph.D.

Dr. Makere Stewart-Harawira is a Professor of Indigenous, Environmental and Global Studies in the Department of Educational Policy Studies and Director of the Traditional Medicine Council of the Integrative Health Institute, at the University of Alberta. at the University of Alberta, Canada. Dr. Stewart-Harawira is a New Zealand Maori and a registered member of the Waitaha Iwi (tribe) and has been engaged in indigenous peoples rights and environmental issues for many decades. Since coming to live in Treaty Six territory in 2004, Makere has worked closely with First Nations communities on freshwater issues. She is an Expert Member on a number of Commissions for the International Union for the Conservation NGO, including the Commission on Environmental, Economic and Social Policy, joint Specialist Group on Indigenous Peoples, Customary & Environmental Laws and Human Rights, and the Commission on Ecosystem Management.
